Since I don't want to 'taint' the WoW main thread here a topic where we can discuss the upcoming Warcraft movie.

( Also known as the I'm Beyond Excited For This And I Want To Discusssss This thread )

Yesterday we were hit with the exciting news that the Warcraft movie has a director. Duncan Jones ( director of Source Code, Moon & Whistle ) signed on to direct the first Warcraft movie.

http://www.hollywood...rce-code-416956

Information so far:

IMDB Movie Page

Production Co's: Legendary Enterainment, Blizzard Entertainment, Atlas Entertainment, Warner Bros. Pictures

Release date : possibly 2015

Director: Duncan Jones

Script: Charles Leavitt

Producer: Charles Roven ( Dark Knight trilogy)

Casting rumours:

Johnny Depp ( in talks )

Soooo , discuss! What story will they do, what are your dream cast peeps, etc.

Personally I would love to see Sean Bean in it and NOT die for a change. However he is already in the upcoming Percy Jackson movie so perhaps it's too much fantasy movies for him.

So I took some time and watched Duncan Jones's Moon and Source Code. Absolutely marvelous movies, I totally recommend them!

They're incredibly far from what I would expect from a Warcraft movie though, so it will be interesting to see how it turns out. I'm now confident that the movie is in good hands though, especially with Roven there too.

I'm not really bothering that much with who's doing the script (although I've seen and loved Leavitt's Blood Diamond and K-PAX), because all the story is pretty much already written, not to mention that he'll be guided every step along the way by Blizzard's Chris Metzen and probably other writers too.

What I'm really hoping is that they'll start with the story as early as possible, from the first wars between Orcs and the rest of Azeroth. Not only because there are some awesome stories there, but because it would leave plenty of room for sequels. :D I see the story from Beyond the Dark Portal as a perfect candidate for this. The one from Reign of Chaos is good too, and I think it's the most probable one, but I feel it would be a shame to miss out on what happened before this.

I think the biggest problem will be they have to make the movie appeal to everyone, not just people who are familiar with wow, or the gaming industry as a whole. I dont know how that is going to be done personally.

If they make it to much like the games they will put off people who dont know the difference between the forsaken and "just another zombie" thats a small example but imagine for a second youve never heard of warcraft, you go see a movie on it and come out of the cinema none the wiser, That could ruin what could be an awsome franchise of movies.

Which leads me to think they will have to make another bog standard movie, with flashy action scenes and no real story element. Im very reserved on this topic i in no way want to get my hopes up and be disappointed with the outcome, i just hope they get it right.

Sam Raimi on Oz, The Avengers, and Two Huge Movies He Never Made

You're no longer attached to the World of Warcraft movie, and now Duncan Jones is making it.
I loved his movie Moon, and I think he's a strikingly talented director. I bet that if anyone can do a great job with it, it's him.
What was the biggest obstacle on that project?
Robert Rodat was working on the script, and it was taking a long time. I think they were getting a little antsy at Legendary, the production company. Actually, what happened was even more complicated, so let me go back a little bit. First, they asked me if I wanted to make it, and I said, "Yes, I love World of Warcraft, and I think it would make a great picture." So I read a screenplay they had that was written by the guys at [Warcraft developer] Blizzard, and it didn't quite work for me. I told them I wanted to make my own original story with Robert, so we pitched it to Legendary and they accepted it, and then we pitched it to Blizzard, and they had reservations, but they accepted it. Then Robert wrote the screenplay, and only once he was done did we realize that Blizzard had veto power, and we didn't know that. And they had never quite approved the original story we pitched them. Those reservations were their way of saying, "We don't approve this story, and we want to go a different way," so after we had spent nine months working on this thing, we basically had to start over. And Robert did start over, but it was taking too long for the people at Blizzard, and their patience ran out. Honestly, I think it was mismanagement on their behalf, not to explain to us that the first story was vetoed long ago. Why did they let us keep working on it? Were they afraid to tell me?

Rob Pardo @Rob_Pardo

I don't want to create controversy, but there are two sides to every story...

btw the way... have I mentioned today yet how I much I love @ManMadeMoon ?

Dont think you can blame blizzard for wanting the last word on the story used, its there game at the end of the day, by the sound of it they kinda scewed him over not telling him they didnt like the idea, but at the same time he surely must have known blizzard would have the last word.

My thoughts exactly. It seems like bad communication between the parties involved. Which is a shame, because it delayed the movie for 2 or 3 years..

Starcraft lends itself more to movies that WoW I reckon.  Imagine a film about a Terran squad defending / counter attacking v Zerg forces; would be class, especially if done as an 18.

I really hope that Blizzard and whoever is making the movie don't hold back on violence etc, I want a truly epic experience. Not half arsed fight scenes and talking for 2 hours.

Yeah I agree.  It need to be more LOTR and less The Hobbit if its really going to succeed I think.

Nick Carpenter, Vice President of Art and Cinematics at Blizzard, recently tweeted that award-winning visual effects specialist Bill Westenhofer of Rhythm and Hues Studios will be directing the Warcraft live-action film. Westenhofer has received Academy Awards for his work on The Golden Compass and Life of Pi, as well as a nomination for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. His numerous special effects credits also include Elf, Men in Black II, Stuart Little, and Speed 2: Cruise Control, among many others.

On iPad so can't format, shoot me.

Legendary Plans First Quarter 2014 Shoot for ‘Warcraft’

Already a small delay, but hopefully a 2015 release is still on the table. I actually have no clue how long it takes for movies to shoot / post-produce / whatever else. :p
