New Titan Job - Graphic Artist Focused on Advertising & Branding.

A new job opening popped up on Blizzard's Jobs Directory page and it's quite an intriguing one.

Graphic Designer/Graphic

ArtistBlizzard Entertainment is looking for an exceptionally skilled graphic designer / artist for its Next-Gen MMO game. The ideal candidate will possess outstanding aesthetic for design, illustration skills, and a thorough understanding of layout, typography, branding campaigns, advertising, and logo design. [...]Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the art leads to conceptualize signage, product identity, advertisements, corporate branding, and general graphic designs.
  • Apply and maintain aesthetic consistency, keep abreast of contemporary styles.
  • Maintain strong familiarity with the game’s art direction, and support it with your designs.
  • Provide artwork as needed to support team-wide project communication and vision.

As you can see, the text is pretty self-explanatory. An important part of this new job is creating material to promote the game. I'm going to make a small logic leap here and say that you don't start looking to fill in this type of job if you don't plan on putting it to good use sometime in the near future. How near? We can't really know, as I've yet to determine a pattern when it comes to the filling period of the jobs listed by Blizzard, but I'm guessing 2013 might be a safe bet. It's definitely a good sign of rel progress, if nothing else. :)

On a mostly unrelated note, more and more small hints and whispers point to Project Blackstone being related to Diablo 3. Even if there's nothing conclusive that supports this and the meaning of the name is still very much in the air, I think we should definitely stay clear of making any connections between the recent domain registration and this job add. Best chances are, they're completely unrelated.

Nice to see this job ad.

Damn if they won't announce Titan within a year.

Within a short period of time I was happy to see the polycount member Oscar Carlen hired as a lighting artist (goes to show that the development is in nice shape) and now this ad.

2012 is they best year so far, 2013 is looking to be the year *gonna go crazy when seeing the first cinematic trailer and spam TitanFocus forum, sorry about that in advance mynsc :) * !!!

Don't be sorry. I'll make it a "everyone's free to spam" day and I'll probably lead the charge.

As you said Mynsc it could be about creating advertisement for Titan, but couldn't it also be that they need someone to create the advertisement within the game?

It doesn't really sound like it. It would also be a bit premature to consider this, as they first have to let all the potential ad-space buyers know what the game-world is about, what type of game Titan is, etc. Which means, promoting, branding, advertising etc.

It might fulfill this role you mention later on, after the game is launched, but not right now, I don't think so.

Well it's not exactly rain for our drought but we can for sure see some storm clouds on the horizon! :D This news is most defiantly hope inspiring that our wait maybe, just maybe coming to an end.

Is this evidence enough to convince people of a 2013 reveal? I would say so, but I'm sure there are still skeptics out there. One thing is for sure, I'm defiantly not missing Blizzcon 2013!

As far as the Project Blackstone thing goes, I want to reiterate what Mynsc said, that is most likey a Diablo deal. The more I read and the things I hear from Blizz point to a Diablo expansion soon, and if anything, this job posting supports that it is NOT Titan. If they had picked out a domain already for Titan, this persons job would have been filled already and had been working on the site. The fact that this job is not yet been filled indicates to me that it will be around 6-8+ months before we see anything from Titan and I think project Blackstone will be revealed around March.

Hope inspiring indeed. I think this just may be evidence enough for a 2013 reveal, y'know. Even if you think about the stupendous amount of work that must go into the brainstorming and conception of the 'face' of Titan it won't take more than an entire 12 months and I'm hoping it will lean us much closer to the reveal cliff.

In regards to Blackstone, I think the whole project idea just conjures up images in my head of some sort of Forsaken experiment with dark magics and thus perhaps fits right in with the Diablo 'way of life', if you will.

I'm going to make a small logic leap here and say that you don't start looking to fill in this type of job if you don't plan on putting it to good use sometime in the near future.

That's immediately what I jumped to as well.  The Titan train is getting ready to move out boys and girls!

With Blizzards track record for Blizzcon being pretty consistent in its time frame im more than certain now that we will see something at the 2013 Blizzcon, 10 - 12 months is more than enough time for them to put together some serious presentation material to show to the world and this job listing just adds more icing on the cake.

Im on the same Boat as Sarn, theres no way im missing next Years Blizzcon, even if i dont go to it in person im definitely going to book some time off just to watch the moment we are all waiting for.

I'm definetely buying the PPV ticket to watch it live.

But I'm gonna be sooooooo jealous on all the people that gets to play the build they'll bring to Blizzcon!

So Sarnakyle and the other here at TitanFocus, if they reveal Titan and you get to play it you better be ready for answering some of our questions about the game :D

On a side note, we all know why Blizzard invited over David Brin, a notable sci-fi writer, to Blizz campus ;).  Rob Pardo tweeted today:

had a great day at Blizzard with @davidbrin1. What a great sci-fiction mind and interesting person!

Nice. This sounds to me that they are in finishing up the game now and Blizzard needs a graphic artist for Titan's Box-Design (just for instance)! yay, we're in ta home stretch!

Keep smiling - it's pretty self-explaining for me now that they will release Titan at least in Q1/Q2 2014

Oscar Carlen is one of the lighting artists, and as I've wrote in a previous post in this forum, this means, they must have been done so far in overall. I mean, it wouldn't make sense to hire lighting artists without a generally finished 3d environment. They're "polishing" now and over the year 2013 the team will fix all bugs and make the game ready to play on mass. A year is still a "long" time for them to make it ready, but that's good, every day they're spending on the project, it'll become better and better. Just stay patient.

As you said Mynsc it could be about creating advertisement for Titan, but couldn't it also be that they need someone to create the advertisement within the game?

They need someone to create Titans logo, icons, artworks for the Titan homepage, ads by Google, their marketing-campaign and to finish the box-design.

In-game ads? It's likely, but only for their own stuff, nothing external. I just can't imagine Coca Cola or McDonalds adverts in the game itself. If that would be true, then the adverts have something to do with the game (like for instance; mcdonalds billboards in the game don't make sense if there aren't any mcdonalds stores etc)

There are only two possibilities:

  • announce Titan before Blizzcon with a tiny lil' trailer, but don't say any specific things,

  • or say nothing until Blizzcon opens up and then throw a bomb of information (more than just a trailer).

To all skeptics: There is so much freedom for the next Blizzcon to announce big projects like WoW's next expansion and Titan.

A Blizzcon Q3 2014 announce would just not make sense in my eyes, because that'd be simply too late as Titan gets older and older. Just stay patient, it's nearly a year from now on, then we will get something juicy, and that's the only thing that can happen imo. Nothing sooner, nothing later.

So Sarnakyle and the other here at TitanFocus, if they reveal Titan and you get to play it you better be ready for answering some of our questions about the game :D

...and make some secret gameplay videos or photos for us if they let you play the game itself (a tiny little spy cam will do it, if they won't allow photoshooting)

For me, it's the evidence that Titan won't feature the same fatasy setting we are used to (like in GW, WoW, Rift etc, all the same). Hurray! Finally something new... so sci-fi seems to be a fix part of Titan.

You're right, sir. Can you imagine what's possible in a year with over 100 people working on a game-project? Imagine,... every day there are working over 100 people to finish Titan. And THAT means something, especially if such a company is already working on that same project for over 5 years now. Yes, it means we can make a safe bet on a 2013 reveal.

Don't get your hopes too high just yet.  The way it goes is that the whole world is divided into tons of subzones that are being worked on relatively independently. This means that a lighting artist might be needed because some of the subzones are in an advanced state where he / she can do its thing. It doesn't mean that the entire world is in the same advanced state. One zone might be completely done, waiting to be shown off (probably one of the starting zones), other zones might be half-done, with people still actively working on them (not only graphic artists, but quest designers, game-play designers and so on) and others are still mostly on paper, waiting to be started.

There are only two possibilities:

  • announce Titan before Blizzcon with a tiny lil' trailer,
  • or say nothing until Blizzcon opens up and then throw a bomb of information (more than just a trailer).

We'll know when it will be announced at least a few weeks before hand. Of that you can be sure. Not only will they start sending teasers, but there's a certain process they have to go through and some of the steps are public (like domains, trademarks and other stuff). So we'll know when and where, we definitely won't be taken completely by surprise (I so hope I won't have to eat these words later on :D ).

On a side note, we all know why Blizzard invited over David Brin, a notable sci-fi writer, to Blizz campus ;).  Rob Pardo tweeted today:

Like we were saying on the chat, they have a habit of inviting celebrities, from all domains, to visit Blizzard HQ and then tweet / write about it etc. Promotional stuff basically. So we don't really know what went down there. It is indeed tempting and relatively safe to assume that they took some SF advice from David Brin and that his invite is not so coincidental. Who knows..

You're right. But I am not changing my opinion.

It's pretty safe to say Titan's launch will be around Q2 2014 due to all infos we got in the past.

And I would say there are far enough devs to finish everything in approx. one year.

I think Q2 2014 is the absolute earliest we can expect it. I definitely don't think it's a safe bet though. :D We'll see. :)

Now now, let's not lose site of what Rob Pardo said back in September of this year:

Titan’s still moving along. I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up that it’s around the corner or anything. It’s a very big project. It’s got a long ways to go. We don’t know yet when we’re going to really start releasing more information. We’re definitely dead in the middle of development at this point. I think we’re over 100 people now on the team working on it.

In the same interview he replies to the assertion that the game has been in development for six years:

It depends on how you look at such things. When we first start a team, we start it really, really small. We might start with just a couple people. We talk about the concepts, we draw some concept art. It definitely has not been in core development for that long. I’d say core development is maybe closer to four-ish years, but even that was with a smaller team.

So from this we can glean that it's unlikely much has changed since September, so the development is near the middle. It's currently been going on for four years, however he also mentions that it has been with a much smaller team. Considering the team is now over 100 and it's nearing ever closer to completion, we could speculate that development may move quicker; they've got a clear way of working now, everyone is assimilated to the project etc.

Anyways, assuming that the team is much larger and perhaps the groundwork is laid, I think we could cut the time down by maybe even half. That sets us in 2014, Q4. I'd also like to mention this lil' bit of info from Wikipedia about MoP:

It was announced on October 21, 2011, by Chris Metzen at BlizzCon 2011,[2] and was released on September 25, 2012

The same for the previous two, Cata and Wotlk being Q4, 2009-2010 and 2007-2008 respectively.

We could make another assumption that they're going to follow the same rule here and reveal Titan a year before it is released. If they're hiring the artists for the graphics stuff now it implies they're preparing to get ready for a reveal. This means that all my assumptions correlate positively to a 2014 Q4 release and a 2013 Q3/4 announcement!

But, that's a lot of assumptions. :D

It's like bubble gum, Chinese food or Cheetos puffs, tasty but never fills the stomach.

Everything DiveDown said.  Unfortunately, I don't see this as being anytime soon.  I'm thinking 1000s of art assets.

Thanks for pointing that out. I just wanted to throw in; we shouldn't forget, that we cannot take previous announce-release dates for Titan, as Blizzard already stated, they want to be much faster with their reveal (after they presented the project officially). So that means we could cut down a year into approx. a half. And that means, if they present it in Q3 2013, they will launch it in Q2 2014, when the easter bunny arrives. :D Thoughts?

DiveDown, you are the most optimistic person on this site, I think

DiveDown, you are the most optimistic person on this site, I think

Isn't it good to have different people in a forum?

Btw.:

I have reasons for all of my assumptions, but I'm not the person who gets disappointed or even angry if some or all of the expectations aren't true at the end.

I think we are all great persons with different views & opinions, and that is something I really like about this awesome website as a whole.

Let's stay tuned  :)

I just hope that if adds are included in the game, that they will fit in with the world and not look out of place. Like, if the game is set in let's say 2530, I don't want to see this

5199178377_a3bf2dd83d_z.jpgHowever, if it looked really futuristic and not out of place, I would be fine with it. I just want the world to feel immersive and not have things, like adds, look out of place.

This also came up for the Diablo III section a while ago.

that's nothing new. i'm tracking their job directory.

Edit:

Bashiok posted today:

"So many cool projects almost done, and I got to fly to Colorado tomorrow! Oh well, the rest of the NA @Warcraft team will bring it all home."

Does this mean something?

Maybe he is talking about the PvP blog for Diablo III that was delayed some time ago. But lets hope it is Titan related! :)

I didn't know where to put this so I'll put it here.

In times of Internet trolls, celebrity troll confessions here on TF and among other no news about Titan here is at least something that can be verified  ;)

Oh, this isn't reddit... I mean Titan announcement confirmed for Blizzcon? :D

EDIT: This post isn't showing up on the latest forum posts sidebar. Working as intended (maybe because it is a news article) or my browser just acting weird?

I found it on the sidebar Papaz.

And I see it too but you forgot something... Titan = HL3 and Gaben is trolling us all by releasing it with Blizzard as the developer!!!! :p

All joking aside, it is interesting to see the differences. After re-reading this forum, I cant help but think that there will be an announcement (and maybe Beta Keys? They have done it with previous titles...) at Blizzcon. I'm jealous of those who can make it :(

Alright, another job position filled. Continuing from my previous post...

If we didn't know anything about Titan or Blizzard All-Stars and only looked at the job postings you would think that Titan is much more ready for release than Blizzard All-Stars :)
