"Titan" trademark filed, but not by Blizzard.

click for full info

Respawn Entertainment has filed a trademark for the word "Titan", usable for "Video and computer game programs; video games discs; video game software".

We always had a solid idea that "Titan" is just the internal codename for Blizzard's new MMO (like "Project Hydra" was for Diablo 3), and I guess this sets it in stone. Respawn Entertainment describes itself as an "independent video game development studio" that's "currently working on its first title," so there isn't any apparent connection with Blizzard.

Meanwhile, we're still waiting for Blizzard to register a trademark for their new MMO. If they plan on releasing any info about it at this year's Blizzcon, like our recent leak hinted, we should see one pop up this summer. As a guideline, they filed the trademark for Mists of Pandaria at the end of July, with Blizzcon that year being towards the end of October.

And since we're on the subject, I want to clarify one of the most often asked questions on TF's forums: yes, this website will change its name to fit with Project Titan's actual commercial name. As soon as I know it, I'll make the switch. Some "Titan" mentions will probably remain here and there, for nostalgia's sake if nothing else. These past two years, while a bit on the quiet side, have been nothing but awesome so I have no intention to completely erase them while advancing forward. :)

Respawn Entertainment could be a part of the development process? It is a team of FPS all stars (EX COD and Halo developers, other FPS games too) so they could be helping with any and all first person events, I.E the ones mentioned in the leak.

well yes, they also seem to be affiliated with EA "Respawn is developing a multi-platform product based on a new video game IP and funded through its publishing deal with Electronic Arts"

Is it strange for a video game development studio to have a deal with and be funded by EA when they dont even have a single title?

edit: I breifly checked their forum for info. A forum moderator said that E3 will bring answers.

This. This is interesting...

Based on their history, not really.  It's pretty reasonable for EA to make a deal with a new studio with known talent.

You guys really think that Blizzard would work at a game for so many years, have more than 100+ devs on it, invest who knows how many resources, but allow a different dev company to hold the rights to its name? :D

99.99% chance that Respawn's Titan and Blizzard's Titan are two completely different games. Actually Respawn has already provided some hints about this still unannounced game they're working on: here and here.

Didn't see the thing about EA, Activision and EA are rivals so I doubt EA and Activision Blizzard would work together.

maybe they chose the name titan because they know there's already some hype about the name in the internet so people will have a look at their company. just as a marketing strategy.

That's definitely a possibility.

Also, Titan is a name that stands out and already has some "weight" behind it. I'm actually surprised that it wasn't trademarked yet, even as a video game.

I actually confused Activision with EA... sorry, my post makes no sense at all now.

Don't worry I thought the exact same thing. :D

It's OK, we'll forgive you both... eventually.

How can Titan not already been trademarked?

mynsc, we should have taken it :)

Now that would have been a front page article. "Titan fansite tired of waiting for announcement, trademarks name Titan as a protest - Take that Blizzard!"

I dont think this is something related to our Titan, but I'm gonna keep an eye on this studio, some members of the team are responsibles of titles like CoD, God of War, Borderlands, Guild Wars even WoW or SC2.

They are not noobs, thats for sure.

Respawn Entertainment was the result of the feud between Infinity Ward Co Founders and Developers (along with many of its staff) Jason West and Vince Zampella. Activision seemingly withheld Royalties owed to the pair for their Call of Duty game Modern Warfare 2.

It was later discovered that West and Zampella were in talks with EA whilst still under contract by Activision and this finding blew up the Court Case for the pairs Royalties ownership.

Ultimately they along with many other highly talented developers in the Infinity Ward ranks either decided to quit or were forced to by Activision, this then brought on the creation of Respawn Entertainment. The majority of their team is made up by those Ex IW Devs and others who have been recruited over the last couple of years.

I read an article sometime ago that they hinted that they wanted to create an innovative and engaging FPS experience which would be in direct competition with CoD, to me it seems like they are looking for revenge but that remains to be seen.

All in all i dont think that Respawns choice of Trademark for their game and their games title has any relation to Blizzards Titan (except for the names likeness) as Respawns crosshairs seem to be pointing directly at Activision and since Blizzard and Activision are close, and Respawn is with EA i doubt it highly that they have any Development relationship with Blizzard.

Interesting news though, i was wondering when we would hear from Respawn about their new game. Im quite excited to see what they come up with now that they are free of the shackles Activision had them in.

Nice summary.

I had heard about this feud but didn't know that Respawn entertainment were the guys from Infinity Ward.

I like FPS games and hope they do something new (that is something else besides modern day shooter)!

The guys that started Respawn made $$$Billions for Activision, this is why they have a deal with EA despite no title.

It's been known for a few years that they were working on some game.

Sorry guys, absolutely, 100%, for sure!, NO CONNECTION to "Project Titan"

I have a new idea for a business. A trademark holding company that other companies can use to register trademarks anonymously. The trademarks can then be transferred to the company closer to release of a product. Who's with me?
