Introducing the "Daily MMO Round-Up" column!

Latest MMO Round-Up: MMO Round-Up 05.07.2013 - The Repopulation, EverQuest Next, Planetside 2, 7 Ways do Die & more! Also details on the switch to a weekly schedule.

Titan Focus will always focus on Titan (doh!), but what to do when there's really not much to focus on? We could just retreat into our "den" and wait there until "spring" comes around again, but maybe there's a better way to pass the time? After a lot of back and forth with some of the more trusted and active members here on TF, we decided to create a second stream of news, focused on MMOs in general.

The first part of this new plan is a (hopefully) daily news column called "Daily MMO Round-Up". I won't go into details about it because you can see its first episode just below. There are two very important aspects about all this though:

  • The front-page will stay 100% Titan. We'll still be searching for news, rumors and everything in between. Nothing changes from this point of view. The new daily column and anything that will accompany it (see next point) will be featured on a second "front-page" and also on the forums, in the MMOs section. So if you're visiting us only for Titan news, absolutely nothing will change. You won't have to dig through the general news about MMOs clutter to see what's new in the Titan world. But with just one additional click (see the sidebar or the News tab at the top), you'll be able to access a new stream of news, which are from the same domain as Project Titan, namely the MMO genre.
  • This second stream of news is open to contributions. While I'll be handling the daily news round-up, anyone wishing to start his own column about any subject related to MMOs, no matter if it's a daily / bi-weekly / weekly thing, is more than welcome to contact me so we can set something up!

So without further ado, here's the first installment of the new column! Future articles won't appear here on the main frontpage, but on the pages I mentioned and linked above. As always, any feedback is more than appreciated!

Opinions / Interviews

CPP CEO, Hilmar Petursson [about the company's evolution, handling multiple products and what's in store in the future - "A big company can become very dumb, very quickly"] - GamesIndustry.biz

But now we are much better structured. EVR [a dogfighting title for Oculus Rift] and Dust 514 are in the EVE universe. World of Darkness is in its own universe, but when we get to that challenge we've already done EVE, done Dust, done experimental things either in virtual reality or mobile.

I would say the industry has been trending our way. I remember when we started download-only in 2004, there was basically no game like that. We've done all these things, but we did them a decade ago, and now we see people replicating what we're doing because people are catching up

CCP's Atlanta studio is also still developing World of Darkness, which Petursson called an "ideal property" for the company's second universe.

We made EVE Online for $3 million. If someone were to entertain the proposition today to make an MMO for $3 million, it would be crazy,

The Top 5 TV shows that should be made into an MMOG [while not one of my top favorites, I'd definitely add Jericho on the list!] - MMO Play

5. Stargate
While Stargate was never the most popular series to start with Star is was still an amazing show with plenty of room to create a fantastic game around. Whether you decide to suit up with SG1 or battle the Goa’Uld as a Jaffa you’re bound to have an exciting time jumping through worm holes and fighting off your enemies.

Dungeon finders are dangerous?  [No for themepark, yes for sandbox, seems to be his conclusion. I say yes to both and any other game that aspires to the MMO tag] - Keen and Graev

Virtual world / pseudo-sandbox / sandbox MMOs are entirely different.  Part of the gameplay is traveling to locations.  Content isn’t something players stand around all day expecting to ‘run-through.’  The dungeons themselves become hubs of socialization.  Meeting people and staying in the area around the dungeon for days isn’t uncommon.  ‘Living’ in a dungeon is part of your character’s progression, and blowing through any content diminishes the fun.  Someone backpacking across Europe doesn’t want to instantly get to each destination; the experience is rooted deep in the journey.

Console controls for MMOs are not for me  [impressions on his recent FF XIV beta experience on PS3] - Tobold's Blog

. You select enemies by cycling through them with the left and right keys. Then you need to hold one of the keys on the back of the gamepad to activate your hotkeys, and only then you can use your main buttons to fire off spells and the like. For experienced console warriors that is probably easy, but I found it overly complicated for my basic attack.

MMO Design

Group Monetization [a study on how creating a persistent gaming collective (MMOs being the ideal medium for this) and nurturing the players through fair mechanics can lead to substantial revenue increases, especially with certain optimizations to the payment model] - Gamasutra

If the average budget of a participant in a massively single player game like Star Wars: The Old Republic is “x”, then you would expect the aggregate budget of 1000 players to be “1000x”. In the presence of a PGC, the budget is not 1000x, it is “Q”, the group budget. Q is always initially greater than the predicted sum of the budgets of all participants, and continues to rise over time if not inhibited. Q is rapidly affected by the group perception of the game environment, and is capable of rising or falling in real time.

PS4 [Sony to announce more PS4 games at Gamescom (August 21st - 25th)] - Gamechup.com

“There’s a lot coming. I’m sure you heard from Shu [Yoshida] that he has 30 games in development. 20 of them are going to ship within the first year of the console’s life, and of those 12 are new IP,” he said. “There’s a lot going on, we need to keep stuff back. We’ve got Gamescom for us Europeans–we need to have something to show at Gamescom, don’t we?”

The Last of Us [Ellen Page, during an AMA on Reddit has said that The Last Of Us "ripped off my likeness". You could argue she has a point, since I was actually incredibly surprised when I realized, after reading this statement, that the voice actress and the model of Ellie from LoU were not done or based on Ellen Page.] - GamesIndustry.biz

"I guess I should be flattered that they ripped off my likeness, but I am actually acting in a video game called Beyond Two Souls, so it was not appreciated," she said in post about the Naughty Dog title.

Awesome idea Mynsc! Well done! I would love to contribute as a columnist!

Awesome mynsc!

While it was REAALLLYYY tempting to hurt your feelings, I just can't when you've worked so hard to provide us with so much information.

This is really cool. I was immediately drawn to the guides, tips, and giveaways section and the off topic (love that Frostbite engine video) section! Its almost an overwhelming amount of information to take in!

I really appreciate the separation of Titan and this MMO section. Great work Mynsc!

I have a few questions to start off the AMA:

  • What games are you expecting Blizz to pop out at BlizzCon 2013?
  • Do you think that Blizz will introduce Smurfs to WoW in the next expansion?
  • If you were a game, what game would you be and why?

(I would also like to answer these questions ehehe)

Looks great! The only thing I was missing was some info on Wildstar, but the info well has been pretty dry recently.

Same, I hope to write about some new MMOs including Wildstar.

Welcome to TitanFocus Atrocity!

I can see that you have done some work when it comes to this new feature, and I appreciate that.

When it comes to the idea and the feature itself however, I'm not really sure what to think yet.

I can see some nice aspects with it, but it doesn't feel that necessary or suitable on this particular site.

Depending on how it plays out, I might well be more positive about it in the future.

In any case I strongly doubt it will ruin the site.

This is just my subjective view on the matter and as I already mentioned, you deserve credit for the work you have done Mynsc.

While talking about it, we did our best to make sure it won't affect the Titan part of the website in any way, so yeah, I don't see how it could have a negative impact. I do have one fear, but it's a technical (SEO) one and it's not really that important. I never really focused on pleasing the search engines before this and I ended up in top 3 on most Titan searches (admittedly without much competition, except from general gaming sites), so I won't start now. :D

Anyway, it's not something that was necessary, but my hope is that it will help keep the website active in a way, in case the Titan news stream will stop for a while, as it's sensible to predict. As for suitable, I'm not sure what you mean. Could you clarify the term and your meaning of it a bit?

Speaking of my own experience so far, this feature has helped me a lot because it made me do some changes related to the presentation of the articles and it also already gave me a small glimpse of how it is to have a daily schedule of publishing articles. In the end, TF will be a Titan news site, so the form of some of the daily content will not differ much from the current MMO Round-Up articles.

Suitable was perhaps the wrong term, as I have mentioned (I think) English is not my native language so I use the wrong words sometimes.

Anyways, what I meant was this: I think that one of Titanfocus's main strengths has been its focus on Titan, bringing out the facts and creating a nice and friendly community really interested in project Titan. I think that this site has tremendous potential in the future when we get closer to and eventually experience the launch of the game.

Now, what I'm a tiny bit worried about is this: If there truly will be a lack of Titan info in the near future, and most of the main updates will concern other mmos (even tho they are on a second page, good system btw), it could cause the dedicated "Titan focused" spirit to diminish a little. Especially for new members that join in the future and haven't been around during the days that the main updates concerned titan exclusively. This in turn could slightly hinder the site from reaching its full potential as a "Top-tier" Titan site when we get closer to release and creating a guild and so forth.

Hope this clarifies my concern a bit, and as I mentioned in the original post it's no game breaker, in my humble opinion Titanfocus is still the best site when it comes to project titan. And I really want it to stay that way, so I might be a bit overanxious when it comes to this matter.

I for one think this was executed very well. While we're all still actively searching for Titan news, this is a good way to give the community a little something extra to talk about. It doesn't seem intrusive, it doesn't take over the website, and I believe we are still THE site that focuses on Titan.

Loving these round-up's!

All hail our fearless leader Mynsc.
